Converting direct speech to reported speech
Aim
Students match direct speech cards to their reported speech equivalents.

B1–B2
Time
20–25 minutes
Preparation
Print and cut one set per group of 3–4.
Procedure
Spread all cards face down in a grid.
Players flip two cards per turn.
If a direct speech card matches its reported version, the player keeps the pair and reads both aloud.
If they don't match, cards go face down again.
Continue until all pairs are matched.
Most pairs wins.
Follow-up: students sort the pairs by the tense change used (present→past, will→would, etc.).

He said that he had bought a new car.
"I don't understand the question," she said.
She said that she didn't understand the question.
"We will meet you at the station," they said.
They said that they would meet me at the station.
"I'm not feeling well," he said.
He said that he wasn't feeling well.
"I want to go home," she said.
She said that she wanted to go home.
"We have been waiting for an hour," they said.
They said that they had been waiting for an hour.
"I may be late," he said.
He said that he might be late.
