Activity Type

Card Game

Focus

Subject-verb agreement in the present simple

Aim

Students practise matching subjects to correctly conjugated present simple verbs.

Level

A1–A2

Time

15–20 minutes

Preparation

Print one set of cards per group of 3–4 students. Cut along the dotted lines.

Procedure

1.

Divide the class into groups of 3–4 and give each group a set of cards, face down in a pile.

2.

Students take turns flipping one card from the pile onto the table.

3.

When a subject card and a matching verb card appear next to each other (e.g., "She" and "eats"), the first student to slap the pair and say the full sentence wins those cards.

4.

If a student slaps incorrectly, they must return two cards to the bottom of the pile.

5.

Continue until all cards are used. The student with the most pairs wins.

6.

As a follow-up, have students write five sentences using the pairs they collected.
