Card Game

Active Passive Snap

Active vs. Passive Voice

Activity Type

Card Game

Focus

Recognising active and passive voice equivalents

Aim

Students match sentences in active voice to their passive equivalents.

Level

B1–B2

Time

20–25 minutes

Preparation

Print and cut one set of cards per group of 3–4 students.

Procedure

1.

Shuffle the cards and deal them equally among all players, face down.

2.

Players take turns placing one card face up in the centre pile.

3.

When a player spots an active-passive pair on top of the pile (e.g., the active version and passive version of the same idea), they slap the pile and shout "Snap!"

4.

The player who slaps first takes all cards from the centre pile.

5.

If a player slaps incorrectly, they give three cards to the player on their left.

6.

Continue until one player has all the cards or time runs out. Most cards wins.

7.

Follow-up: groups sort all their pairs into two columns on their desk — active and passive.
