Six Months of English

Six months ago, I started attending an English class twice a week. I can now describe my daily routine, talk about the past, and make plans for the future. Last month, I went to a meeting in English and understood most of what was said — that was the proudest moment of my learning journey. My speaking is more confident than before and I am making fewer mistakes in writing. I should practise listening more because I still find fast speakers difficult. I am going to sign up for an advanced class next year.

1. How has the writer's English improved?

2. What does the writer say they should practise more?

Discuss these questions with a partner or your teacher.

1Without notes, describe your typical week to your partner using present simple, past simple, and going to for future plans.
2Tell your partner one thing you are proud of learning in English so far, and one thing you want to improve.

Write a short self-assessment (5–8 sentences) about your English learning. Use multiple tenses and structures from this unit.

Example: I have been studying English for eight months. I can now communicate in most everyday situations. My grammar is better than it was at the beginning, although I sometimes make mistakes with irregular verbs. Yesterday I had a short conversation with a colleague in English and I was very pleased. I am going to practise speaking more because I think it is my weakest area. I usually study for thirty minutes every evening. I should probably revise more vocabulary too.
